Institute of Medicine in Tribhuvan University

The Institute of Medicine, also known as IOM is located in the capital city of Nepal. Located beautifully at Kathmandu, the institute is regarded to be among the top medical institution of Nepal.  It was established in the year 1972 at Tribhuvan University and since then, it has been continuously providing exceptionally good Healthcare Education.

The institute came into being with an objective of training healthcare workers at all levels. The aim was clear; it wanted to meet the healthcare manpower needs of the country of Nepal. Sooner after its inception, within the initial 3 decades, the institute has developed a total of 12 campuses all over the country. Three of its campuses are located gracefully at Kathmandu and nine are located outside of it.

History of the Institute of Medicine in Tribhuvan University

Taking a look at the initial objective of the institute, one finds that it was started to provide training to the middle level health workers. For this purpose, the Institute of Medicine started up with the programs like ANM, Pharmacy, CMA, Radiology, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Health Laboratory and Traditional Medicine.

However, with the changing circumstances and needs, there is a change in the the institutional goals of the country. The mission of the institute eventually went on to see expansion and it started focusing on training at tertiary level for health professionals. By 1977, IOM launched a graduate level course. This level was inclusive of the 2 year bachelor of Nursing programs in Community Nursing, Pediatric Nursing and Adult Nursing.

With further expansion, the institute started up with the community oriented MBBS program in 1978. Initially, the number of students were seen to be 22 that later expanded to 60. Further, by 1982 a great addition was seen in the infrastructure of the Institute of Medicine. A 300 bedded teaching hospital was completed in 1982 with the support of JICA. Today, this hospital is into providing services to general people and has also grown to become a center for the teaching, learning and research activities of different programs which are run by IOM.

Also, the year 1982 saw other more interesting activities, such as initiation of a post-graduate level generalist training in collaboration with the University of Calgary at Canada. Later in 1984, a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Anesthesiology was started with the support from University Of Calgary, Canada.

In 2008 the super specialized training started. This year saw the MCh Program of surgery in the following fields:
  • Gastroentorology
  • Urology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Cardiothoracic and Vascular
Today the institute is running 29 different programs. These programs stretch from  providing simple certificate level to the highest postgraduate degree in medicine, public health, paramedical, nursing and traditional medicine (Ayurveda Science).
