Institute of Engineering of Tribhuvan University

The Institute of Engineering at Pulchowk under Tribhuvan University is regarded to be amongst the top institutes which are delivering Engineering Education in Nepal. The institute has created an excellent image of it in the eyes of the people and is globally admired for providing Engineering Education. The campus at Pulchowk has been well organized and the institute has assigned each of its programs to the respective departments which have the power of self-regulation as well.

History of Institute of Engineering (IOE) in Tribhuvan University

Nepal started to deliver Engineering Education from 1942 by the establishment of Technical Training School. The school had an engineering section, which was providing only trade and civil sub-overseers programs. However in 1959, the Nepal Engineering Institute along with the assistance of government of India began offering civil overseer courses, allowing students to acquire Diploma in Civil Engineering.

In 1965, the Technical Training Institute with the help of Government of federal republic of Germany began providing technical courses in auto mechanics, electrical engineering, general mechanics and mechanical drafting. Big step towards growth was undertaken when in the year 1972,  Nepal Engineering Institute at Pulchowk and the Technical Training Institute at Thapathali were brought under the Tribhuvan University and renamed to Pulchowk Campus and Thapathali Campus.

From those days till today, the Institute of Engineering has witnessed expansion and considerable growth.  With the assistance from UNPD/ILO the technician programs in Electrical, Electronics, Refrigeration/Air-conditioning Engineering was started. The Architecture Technician program was started by the IOE on its own. IOE, apart from being helped by UNPD/ILO was also very well assisted by World Bank and the UK.

In the academic year of 1998-1999 the institute began delivering Computer Engineering Education through its Bachelor’s degree program. It is to be mentioned that the diploma level programs at the Pulchowk Campus have been transferred to other three IOE campuses.
